The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

To an untrained eye few would pick why two of these stumps could potentially cost you thousands.

For a start those spikes sticking up are what we refer to as pulled of drawn wood. This happens when a tree faller uses incorrect technique or just gets lazy. Simple as that.

It is often also a sign that Safety standards are beginning to be compromised.

As far as value recovery is concerned, pulled or drawn wood affects the quality at the bottom of the log and often will not be accepted by sawmill customers. Therefore, before logmaking begins, the entire section of pulled log is removed and wasted.

If a tree faller fells 150 trees a day in a pruned stand you soon see how the compounding waste adds up to thousands of dollars. Especially when you consider that the bottom pruned ‘butt’ log is worth the most in customer dollar terms per tonne.

Fortunately Ribbonwood can provide excellent qualified tree fallers and more importantly, a well trained eye to watch over them.
